GE XWFE vs XWF Water Filter: What's the Difference and Which One Fits Your Fridge?

If you own a GE refrigerator, you have probably run into two very similar-looking filter names: XWF and XWFE. They look almost identical, they twist into the same slot, and the one-letter difference causes a lot of confusion. Here is everything you need to know before you buy your next replacement.

The Short Answer

XWFE is the newer version of XWF. GE introduced the XWF around 2017 and replaced it with the XWFE in late 2019. The physical size and filtration job are essentially the same — the big difference is that the XWFE has a small RFID chip on the back that newer GE refrigerators use to recognize the filter.

Key Differences at a Glance

  • RFID chip: XWFE has one; XWF does not.
  • Fridge era: XWF shipped with many 2017–2019 GE models; XWFE ships with late-2019 and newer models.
  • Interchangeability: an XWFE works in place of an XWF in most fridges. The reverse is not always true — many newer GE fridges look for the chip and may limit water/ice features if they cannot detect it.
  • Price: OEM XWFE filters typically cost more. Compatible replacements can cut that cost by up to half.

Which One Does My Fridge Need?

The fastest way to check: pull out your current filter and read the label. If it says XWFE, stay with XWFE-style. If it says XWF and your fridge was bought before late 2019, an XWF-style filter fits — and an XWFE-style also works if you want to future-proof.

How Often Should You Replace It?

GE recommends replacing the filter about every 6 months for the best taste and flow — sooner if you have hard water or a busy kitchen. A slow dispenser or off-tasting ice is usually the filter telling you it is time.

Save Up to 50% With Compatible Replacements

You do not have to pay OEM prices twice a year. At Snagva we carry compatible options for both filters, shipped from a U.S. warehouse with 30-day returns:

Multi-packs bring the per-filter price down further — a 4-pack covers your fridge for roughly two years.

FAQ

Can I use an XWF in a fridge that came with XWFE?
Usually not recommended. Many newer GE models check for the RFID chip and may restrict dispensing without it. Choose an XWFE-style filter (our No Chip Required version avoids chip-swapping entirely).

Can I use an XWFE in a fridge that came with XWF?
Yes — in most models the XWFE is backward-compatible with XWF applications.

Are compatible filters safe?
Quality compatible filters use NSF-grade filtration materials and are designed to meet the same fit and everyday performance as the referenced OEM filter — at a fraction of the price. Brand names are used for fitment reference only.
